The Slovenian Alpine Museum houses a vast collection of items with a rich historical background. The diversified photographic and archival materials and extensive specialist library offer insight into the mass appeal and significance of mountaineering in Slovenia. The collection also contains artefacts related to music.
The exhibits on view include items that belonged to Jakob Aljaž, e.g. his linden-wood hiking cane bearing inscriptions of his friends’ names, a binoculars stand and embossing press. The most important documents include the surviving purchase contract for the summit of Mount Triglav and the purchase agreement for the plot of land in the Vrata Valley on which the Aljaž mountain lodge was built. The registers of the Aljaž Tower and Aljaž Lodge are of historical value. The Slovenian Alpine Museum’s photo library holds original photographs of Jakob Aljaž, as well as of his Tower and Lodge, and his representations are featured on various items (pins, magnets, badges…).
The Slovenian Alpine Museum’s collections include sheet-music artefacts. Especially noteworthy is that of the song Triglav, sung in commemoration of the opening of the Triglav Lodge at Kredarica and, a year previously, at a ceremony marking the opening of the Aljaž Tower. Also on view are Slovenska pesmarica (Slovenian Songbook, 1896) and a film music score by Bojan Adamič, the soundtrack for Triglavske strmine (The Slopes of Triglav).
The exhibition provides partial accessibility to visually impaired visitors and is complemented by a diversified programme of educational workshops, occasional exhibitions and numerous events.
